I may be mistaken, but I don't think any of the newer units like Briscoe have housing for anyone except the senior warden. The academy should be able to accommodate cadets in a BOQ type setting. However, once assigned to the unit I believe you'll be on your own. Welcome to TDCJ. Glad to have you.

Sorry, I work region 6 at a 2250 untit. I've actually never heard of the Briscoe Unit. I wouldn't count on them having BOQ at all and if they did, I'm sure there would be a waiting list. Why not call the unit and ask? Dolph Briscoe Unit: 1459 West Highway 85, Dilley, TX 78017 (830) 965-4444

Most of the newer units do NOT have a BOQ, or any housing for any staff. The exception would be the senior warden. Quite a few of the newer units have a house for the senior warden.

Wow!thanks...That means I will have to commute 3hrs+ everyday! Depending on your shift schedule along with your 3+ hour drive, you're probably looking at 16 to 17 hour days. Welcome to TDCJ!

An RV is an excellent idea. There should be an RV park nearby, and you could probably rent a spot by the month. Also, if there is a state park nearby you can buy a yearly park pass and camping is much cheaper. That could work well for you. Just RV camp during your work week, and head home on your off days. My father inlaw did that when he first started, and didn't own a home near the unit.

I doubt you'd get the treatment that an Assistant Warden would get...One of our AW's Got special treatment...They put in a Pad on the Backside of the Unit. By the Kennels..just like at an RV PArk complete with Satalite, Phone, Water, even a Brick BBQ built by the Bricklayers in School. Everyone hated it because unless he was off (no week end duty) he was on the Unit and kept an Eye on the Night Shift. Many People here...Find a Roommate on the Same shift and Stay with someone local, and only drive home....Be wise to do that...We have lost to many Officers from falling asleep at the wheel....Lack of sleep rapidly catches up with you..even more so on Night shift.

accussedsnitchgp11 Thanks a lot!Learning pretty fast from you guys already...I would explore all my options once i finish academy and see how it goes! To hell with that...Day 1 in the Academy....Stand up and introduce yourself....Explain your situation....Ask if anyone is willing to help out..Not sure how your academy works down there since From Day 1 I was on Allred..Are you attend a Unit specific Academy or a Regional....Marine Corp wanna be and All.We have our own Academy..In my 12.5 years I set foot in one Other Unit for about 15 minutes...I did one Transport to Montford in the dark of night..Other than that I have only passed them by on the Interstate...I do believe I saw Sign going to Galveston Island at Night time. They told us on Day One the Only way we were not gonna pass the Course was if we didn't come back on our own accord...We had people show up with Hair Down to their Shoulders and bigger beards than ZZ TOP...They were asked if they could get a hair cut and shave and be back at the Unit at 1pm...when Lunch break was over. We had to sit alphabetical except the guy who kept failing asleep...he got the seat next to me...My Chore, Keeping him awake. We started with 59....Graduated 59...2 were on Delayed entry in the military... so We Started OJT with 57...

Four platoons at Edmundo Mireles in Beeville. Does TDCJ still see those numbers for new hires?
But back to the main point. Briscoe is in Dilley. Limited housing there, in Cotulla, and Pearsall. San Antonio is little over an hour away. I'd move if I were you to get closer to the job. Then put in a transfer and wait. Oil field and oil field type people in the area, so housing is expensive.
Devine is about an hour away and is very close to San Antonio but still a rough place to live without big city amenities. It's also pretty tough being an outsider in those towns. Locals don't ever really accept you. Good luck.
No BOQs in Briscoe though for sure. Not in Cotulla either. There's a federal detention center for aliens in Pearsall, but they aren't state or federal; privately contracted. That puts SA about 45 minutes away. I lived in that area for a couple of years. Didn't like it much but held on until I could get a transfer.
