If anyone has any info about the Gatesville units or Marlin units, I'd appreciate it. Shift times, what to expect, etc. I've read a lot of info on this board that makes me leery about working for TDCJ. Is there truly that much corruption among the employees?

Don't worry so much about what you read on this board. Take the job and then go in with the attitude to make a difference.

I'm a 39 yro female with prior military service and considering applying for a co position in the Gatesville area? Are they needing Co's in this region and what should I expect as a woman entering this field? Any constructive advice appreciated. Find a man who will marry you and then stay home and clean house and make pies.

If anyone has any info about the Gatesville units or Marlin units, I'd appreciate it. Shift times, what to expect, etc. I've read a lot of info on this board that makes me leery about working for TDCJ. Is there truly that much corruption among the employees? Is there corruption? YES, there is, just like in any other law enforcement agency. There will always be crooked employee's. They are the minority. In my career(32 plus yrs) I've had the displeasure of watching a bunch of them get walked off. I've helped with a bunch of the investigations to get the evidence needed to prosecute them. And, I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I see them placed in handcuffs. I can't stand crooked staff, no matter who they are. And, I'll do my dead level best at busting them. With all that said, I gotta tell you I LOVE, yes I said LOVE, my job. The agency has been very good to me. I've worked with some fantastic staff, including some fantastic administrators and supervisors. If I had to give you any advice it would be to learn as much as you can. Policy is your friend. Learn to USE policy to your advantage. Also learn how to use policy to HELP your agency, supervisors and unit. Learn how to write a LEGIBLE, ACCURATE, GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT report. Good reports have saved my azz many times over the years. If it ain't written down, it DIDN'T happen. The job is what you make it to be. Chronic complainers are NEVER happy, no matter where they work, or who they have for a supervisor. Have a good attitude. And, if you make a mistake, own up to it. NEVER lie to cover up your mistake. If you did it, own it. The warden is far more likely to show lenience to someone who admits to a mistake and try's to do better, than an officer who lie's to him to hide. Take pride in the uniform and the job you do. You will be serving the citizens of the Great State of TEXAS!!!!

Sadly there will always be some form of Corruption... is 1 officer out of 100 that bad..after all that is only 1%...but yes To the Dedicated we want 0%... It is the 1% that gives every Dedicated Officer a Bad name...It is the 1 that shines in the Spot Light on the News not the other 99.
Ultimately it is You that will decide how long you last... Stay true to yourself.
Give it 100%
Although My Time with TDCJ is done.. I gave it 100% all the Time... I bleed for TDCJ...I sweated for TDCJ...My Body gave it all it could..Bad Back, Diabetes, Cancer, Ruptured Ear Drum, Sleep Apnea...I was not gonna drop dead for them and putting others lives in Jeopardy was not an Ethical thing I could not live with anymore just for Money. I made it 12.5 and that was 10.5 years longer than I wanted to stay from the start...
I am still proud out what I did and How I did it. I never did anything Illegal and I never personal had any Immediate Knowledge of anyone being corrupt...without it being found out during an Shakedown..Lost a few Trusted Co-Workers and that hurt...

Stoddard, I've been through several cases where I knew a staff member who was crooked, and committing felonys. I was disappointed in each of them. And, I still got the warm and fuzzies when we busted them. I can't stand a crooked staff member, period.

Oh I got that feeling also when I was on shakedown crew and helping with the investigations...Sadly I also know several that were "Good Ol' Boy Types" that could always stay one step ahead of us...and we never could catch enough evidence to prosecute them.
