Sounds like a place to avoid. I think I will.

Allred has a hiring event on January 30th. I was planning on attending. You talked me out of it. I cancelled my hotel reservation.

I don't know. I know too many good people who didn't make it there. And what you describe sounds like Leavenworth in 2002. Then there were the inmates. I don't need to live through that again on the hope that it will improve.

In our agency there are definitely different cultures on different units, some more better than others.

From this distance it's hard to tell which ones are any good.

Crosstimber Hughes has usually been pretty decent, but the past year brought a lot of changes with retirement, promotion etc. New warden there, new regional director and all the way to the top - all new to their current positions. Might wanna ask someone in there now...

I've heard good things about Hughes for years.

Yea, Hughes has had a good reputation for a good while. Lots of retired military working at Hughes due to it's proximity to Ft Hood. If I had to chose a farm to work at it would be Ramsey. I know a lot of the rank there, and they're pretty good. I started there back in '82. It's an old farm, but has good staff.

The A. Hughes Unit is still an excellent unit to work at even with a new Warden being there now. Warden Blackwell is doing just fine here with us and knows his business here very well. The rest of the supervisors here are generally solid and reliable as well.

Are there any decent rentals in Gatesville? There are some decent apartments and houses for rent in Gatesville and the advantage of living here means that you'll be only 5-10 minutes away from your workplace. It's absolutely wonderful having such a short commute to work. There are a whole lot more rentals available in Copperas Cove and you'll have a 30-45 minute commute but that's still not too bad and Copperas Cove has much more to offer than Gatesville does because it is closer to Fort Hood and much larger. You can also go with the BOQ route. Those are readily available (waiting list is within 2-3 months or less) and those only cost $25 a month but be assured that that it's not fancy however it's still a good deal if your primary residence is far from your workplace. Rentals are very reasonable in central Texas. They range anywhere from around $300 for an efficiency apartment all the way up to over $1000 for a full-size (3-4 or more bedrooms) house.

How short handed are you at Hughes?
