I have a few general questions about starting with TDCJ at the Stiles unit. I will be graduating with a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice Dec 2013, and I feel confident with my spotless background I should be able to get a job here.
One of my first questions, is how good are they about honoring a request to work at the Stiles unit? I know it is one of the critical units, which is why they have the hiring bonus, but will the honor my request if some other unit is more critical?
Second, How much overtime can a new officer expect, if he wants to work as much as possible. I'd be the first to volunteer, even on holidays like Christmas and New Year's. Working corrections is my dream, and without a family, I'd like to work as much as I can.
Third, What is a realistic time frame for promotions, specifically to Sergeant, for someone with a bachelor's?
Thank you for your help, and my apologies if the answers are already posted. I could not find them if they were. Merry Christmas!

Why??? If you really "dream" of corrections Go Feds!!! You'll make A LOT more $ and be able to pay off your loans quicker.

Well I don't have any student loans. Besides that, I may end up doing FBOP, but I can't apply with them until I have my degree. I can have a job with TDCJ lined up a good 10 months before I graduate. I don't necessarily want to be the one to clean up Stiles, but I won't contribute to the problem I assure you.
The way the work program works at my school, and with my free senior year, I'll actually get a check from the school for about $4,000 when I graduate, and that and the hiring bonus with TDCJ it'll make up for the pay difference for the first year. Getting the mortgage down payment assistance after my first year with TDCJ when I get HD pay will also be a great benefit. After that I can try and get on with FBOP in beaumont. I'll have a degree AND a year of experience.
If ya'll dont mind though, I'd still love to know how much overtime a new officer can expect (when volunteering for it) and how long promotions generally take. Thanks!

Your chances are almost guaranteed. If you request a unit giving bonuses they really need people. I believe Warden Alford is over Stiles, and you'll like him. A worked for him when he made Captain at Clemens and again when he was Warden there. With a degree and a good work history he'll have no problem promoting you. You'll need swome experiance though, give yourself a year. Work as many areas as you can and become an expert at them all. If you want to supervise you will need to know what you staff do on each.
As far as overtime, it is almost limitless. But, you have to be able to perform you job 100% all the time. So, if you are too tired you need to rest. I've worked with people who worked so much they couldn't do the job at all. It's dangerous for everyone. They may limit you to a number of hours of OT for that reason.
Working in TDCJ is like no other job. You don't produce or repair anything so it's very hard to feel like you accomplished anything. It can be a very negative place too. The main goal is to go home unharmed. Set your own mini goals.
I'll let you learn the rest on the job. Stay positive!!!

The warden at Stiles is Michael Roesler. There is OT sometimes, but they try not to use it if possible. With a degree you can go as high in rank as you want in TDCJ. Now day's the applicant pools for sergeants and lieutenants are rather thin. So, making sergeant or lieutenant once you qualify should be no problem for someone with a bit of determination and good work ethic. Captain, Major and Asst Warden take a bit more politicking. But, they are definitely attainable. I have many friends who I've watched go from CO to the higher ranks. You can do it. We need good folks going up for rank. Hire on and make a career of it. We NEED people like you!!

Thank you mley1. I am hoping to make a career out of it. I'm a single guy with no family or desire for one, ripe for turning into a workaholic Hopefully I will be able to promote steadily. I'd be very happy with retiring as a Major, but Warden is my true goal, and I think becoming one in a state prison system should be more attainable than in the FBOP. I'm planning on working there until I'm 50 or close to it, so maybe that'll give me enough time. Thanks again for ya'lls help!
