I'm a 39 yro female with prior military service and considering applying for a co position in the Gatesville area? Are they needing Co's in this region and what should I expect as a woman entering this field? Any constructive advice appreciated.

Expect to see a lot of Peckers...Expect to be treated like a Queen when Someone wants something from you and then be treated like the worlds biggest B*tch when you say no.. This field ain't no different from any Job...You won't see the real face of Corrections until your there.....If your Pretty and have a Nice Body expect to get the Eye Candy Jobs and be called a whore by those who don't work the Cush positions...If your friendly your gonna be the new slut on shift..out to steal the hags old man..etc...Working for TDCJ is like traveling back in time to Junior High..Some will survive and others won't last..
How long were you in the Military? What was your MOS? Remember to apply the proper paperwork and get that accelerated pay..Start at CO3 instead of CO1

Thank you. The article was great. I was in the military for 10 years. My MOS had nothing to do with a CO career field. I was a computer specialist. I guess my worry is that will I not be taken seriously due to my gender and size. I'm 5'6" and 120 lbs. I am not vain but have been told I'm attractive. I know I can do the job well, but I also know that I will have a problem with someone trying to walk all over me because I'm a woman. I've heard how bad TDCJ is a "good ol' boys" institution. I just don't want to be set up for failure.

Been Standing up and Fighting for myself for 12 years and Counting..They ain't gonna run me off on their terms...I will quit when I am ready..I hold my head up...Give my best everyday...I know I do what I can..No matter what anyone says..or does...I don't just do the Minimum and lie about it...Never been accused Being Lazy..I might never get promoted..But I rather have pride in my work...than get promoted without doing the job 100%

Don't let these guys scare you off. Women in corrections have come a long way since I started back in 1982. Women have the same chances at promotions as men do now days. And, we have women at all levels of supervision in our agency. The opportunities for women in corrections are endless. And, don't think for one minute your small size is a detriment. It's not. I've worked with lots of ladies your size who I'd rather work with than most men. If you've got high morals, guts, determination, and intestinal fortitude, corrections may be for you. We need good employee's with military experience.
As for training, you'll get the same training as any man would. TDCJ does not change training based on gender. The training is not tough. If you're used to military PT, our training will seem rather sedentary. I got bad knee's, bad back, a pot belly, am over 50, and I shamed some of the youngsters at my last inservice training. Some of the young blood we got now days are wimpy cry babies. My last PAT score was 153. All you need to pass is a 75. So you'll do fine. Put in an application and hire on. We could sure use you!!!!

I just happen to be looking for a 39 yoa former military career oriented chick. I like quiet time and long strolls on the beach. I'm a good listener and not pushy. We sound like we were meant to be together.
