This overtime freeze shit really is BS. I'm a new hire. When I applied they offered unlimited overtime, then I get out of training at this agency I gotta eat ramen. Wtf? Why not quit? Why would a new hire stay on?

Mandantory Overtime on Allred started after I left...But they still sent people home.. Depends on Where your at it may come back or it may not.....Some Admins just don't use it... Physically It takes it toll on people fast..
Honestly Where can you make as much money as you do for TDCJ?
On Allred without Overtime I would be making Almost 20 per Hour...4/4 worked out to 189 Hours a Month...With Hazzard Duty I would be Approximately about 3800 Before Taxes... Unless you have a College Degree around here you will be lucky to ever make more than $9 an Hour..To Make 3800 at 9 You Gotta Work 400+ Hours a Month.
When I started TDCJ it was 1700 to start no excellerated and I cam in On a Round of Raises..
Yopu gotta learn to Budget..

Here in Region VI the overtime is pretty much non-existent nowadays. The budget just won't allow for it anymore due to the requirement for the state to pay for all of these diversion therapy programs, various audits, accreditations and such. The best thing to do is to work at a 4/4 unit. Those type of units typically have the best overtime opportunities when it's available but it's not something that you can count on all the time. A good number of us that work at these 4/4 units have some type of small side business or a part-time job to supplement our income. With four days off every week, you'll have pretty ample time to run a small side business or work at a part-time job to supplement your income as needed. As an example, I used to work for various temporary agencies on my off-days for extra money when there was no more overtime. Those agencies would give different jobs to do each time and it kept me interested because I had the opportunity to learn new trades and to do something different all the time. I'm retired military now and I don't need to work all of that overtime anymore but I still find ways to make extra money when I like to do so. My thing for extra money nowadays is to build patio furniture and wooden ice chests that I sell at the flea markets and such. It doesn't take up a lot of my time, it is something fun to do and it pays very well. There's always opportunities around if you're willing to think outside of the box a little bit.

Overtime runs in cycles. At our unit typically OT is good when we have several inmates at freeworld hospitals. That's because it takes two officers per inmate. So, the shift drops quick from officers being off unit. When that happens OT is there for the taking at our unit. With budget constraints though, the admin have to justify every hour of OT they pay. So, if it's not absolutely necessary it ain't happening.
