I read the article. Good luck with the speculation on all of that. Could it happen as the article says, yes. May very well happen. Will it happen anytime soon? I doubt it. To sell both units, relocate their staff and the essential functions of both units will be massive. Wynn farm doesn't just house inmates and horses. They also have a massive warehouse and trucking depot there. If that were to be moved, where would it be moved. I'm not aware of any other unit with that capability at the moment. Essentially a new warehouse and depot would have to be built, with the supporting unit nearby that could staff it with inmates and employee's. You're talking a lot of money, and time. Holiday is similar. It's our biggest intake facility, built to take over that responsibility from Diagnostic unit, now know as the Byrd unit. TDCJ grew so large the old Diagnostic unit couldn't handle that many inmates coming in. Hello Holliday.
Anyhow, I think the person who wrote the article has thought it all out in their heads. Perhaps it may come to pass, perhaps not. If I were a betting man, I'd wager money that it won't happen in the next ten years at least, maybe even longer.

Sell now...Worry Later... Yea it is as simple as move it all to other Units.....yea right. Build newer units. Build new housing for Officers..Why not build Housing on All Units? As always they don't address the real reasons why people don't want to work for TDCJ....I never knew Housing was Available when I worked for them.
When stuff get moved, many employees won't want to move to a different city....Kids in Schools and sports, Own a House. I wonder how many would retire if they did close down the Units instead of uprooting and moving....
Will the Government pay taxes on the Land over the next 15 or more years to Help with that sudden influx of undeveloped land until it is all Developed and Taxed....What will the Federal Easements allow to be built...It be years before those Tax funds roll in.

I am sure the sale will be approved the next sunset commission and at the next legislation for budget..... as for the TDCJ getting anything from the deal...not in 15 years at least.

Uh, maybe. Who is this character that wrote that article? He is the first one I've heard comment about all of that. If it were true there would be large rumblings going on in the agency. I have heard NONE, until now. I won't say it'll never happen. Hell, ya'll may be right. But, I sorta doubt it. If I were a betting man, my money would be on it going South of Huntsville. There would be little resistance, and it could go through land that is already owned by the federal government, and with no need to relocate any TDCJ unit. But, what do I know.

Ah, Lance Lowery wrote the article. Well, we shall see how close he comes to being right. I suspect though that it will be many years before that happens. I notice folks on his blog site environmental impact as a reason why the highway wouldn't go South of Huntsville. I got news for them. There already is an interstate going through the middle of SHNF. It's I45. SHNF is on both sides of I45 on the South side of Huntsville. I doubt seriously that would be a limiting factor in this case.

The article talks about how Huntsville ISD is a "poor district."
Ha, if Huntsville is poor, what's a place like Ft. Stockton or Dalhart? LOL
Huntsville has a large university (people who work at a university tend to be college-educated), lots of retirees from Houston that own vacation property and rentals (for the college kids) in the area, is a short drive from The Woodlands, etc.

In other words, sure, Walker County is primarily rural. "Poor" is a stretch, though.
