Should there be a Union Legal Fund set up to assist Officers fight against TDCJ?
Should there be more to being a Union than handing out pens and caps and taking dues?

Should there be a Union Legal Fund set up to assist Officers fight against TDCJ? Should there be more to being a Union than handing out pens and caps and taking dues? Previously I worked for a railroad and at some point was the President Elect of the United Transportation Union representing switchman for two railroad yards. I had several hundred members and we coordinated our efforts with other unions effectively using the weight of the will of tens of thousands of other members. The single one thing that would get the attention of our management was that we could strike. If we called the members to go out on strike the company not only didn't make money, but they spent money to deal with preparing for the strike and the after effects. I was involved in seven strikes and each and every time our demands were met. Not every strike involved higher salary either so it was a greed thing. You can create a union, but if you don't have the power to stop work then a union has absolutely no value.

The unions for TDCJ in Texas all claim they got us this last raise. The only organization with paid lobbyists for us is TPEA to my knowledge. I've been a member with them for about 15yrs. Union reps have told me they could help during disciplinary proceedings. Yea, right. All they can be is an observer, and give advice to the person being disciplined. They have no say in anything that happens. I'm not a big union fan. None of them could tell they were giving me anything of value for the union dues.

We need "Teeth" in a Court of Law...We need to have Lawyers Representing Officers when They need it not just some court appointed Lawyer. Having a Union Representative sit in is a great things I we could have a lawyer fighting for Us....Every time I had a Union Rep sitting in except one did they watch what they said...That last time since I can't afford an Attorney It does not matter...When it was Investigated by Regional Director..They said "I didn't say that" and thats as far as it got...Never Asked the Union Rep that was there if it was said. Doubt it would matter anyways.
