How does it work? If you work at a 12 hour unit do you work two on and six off? Or are your workdays split, or do you work on call? Or all of the above?
It sounds like it may be a hell of a good retirement job.

It sounds like it may be a hell of a good retirement job. The way its always worked for me is when I wake up and feel like going to work, I go to work. At whatever point I get tired and want to go home, I go home. I never split my days off, but I sure take a lot of 3 day and 4 day weekends. Life is good.

My understanding is that most units that have part time officers use them for visitation. That free's up the shift officers, and doesn't require H card to come in on weekends to cover visitation. I would imagine the wardens of the units with part time help can use them any way they deem necessary for the unit.

Ours started out Only Visitation... Then they were moved out of Visitation (to much Contraband was being missed) and Shift people took over and they were regulated to the Dorms... Slowly Some quit, some came to full time, some moved to other departments full time...they never were replaced..So H Card and Field Officers still have come in to help cover Visitation
One of the Last part timers was CPT C's wife..assigned to Dorms but feed Chow a lot.
