I've been hired as an electrical maintenance supervisor for the Hobby unit. I'm a complete newbie to corrections. I am a retired Marine. What can I expect from the academy to the day to day routine? Any insight would be appreciated.

1st day of the academy is in the books. Seems like this is going to be a good fit for me.

I got three years in grey but I spent one and a half years at region one maintenance.Maintenance is not a bad job just maintain tool control and key control and u wont have problems. U usually have alot of preventive maintenance type stuff to do monthly and then whatever comes up. Good luck!

Finished week 3, heading into week 4. Still loving it. Staff is all very motivated and professional. Love DT, should've done this years ago.
training is not a true indicator of the Real atmosphere of a unit. I still wish you the best of Luck.

Understand there's a vast difference between training environment and real life. Still looking forward to reality coming downrange and enjoying the school house as well. PMA all day!

The unit will be vastly different than the academy. Policy is your friend.

Graduated last Friday, even managed to receive the Beto award for highest GPA. First day at my new unit tomorrow. Excited to get my new career underway.

So, three weeks into working at Hobby. Had 2 days of OJT then thrown to the maintenance guys. Gotta say this is still one of the most satisfying jobs I've ever worked. Good group of guys in maint and fairly competent offenders turning the wrenches. Haven't had any negative run ins with anyone yet. Everyone seems supportive and cordial. Really enjoying this line of work.

Really enjoying this line of work. Sounds good. Glad your liking your new job. I tell people all the time how much I love TDCJ. They've taken good care of me and my family over the years. In maintenance you'll run into a few pitfalls, most notably the budget, and wait times for parts. I've seen also wait times for approvals on major work orders. Sometimes the wheels turn slow. But, once they turn and you get to take care of business, I would imagine your job is one of the most satisfying jobs in TDCJ. You actually get to see viable results from your work. Welcome to TDCJ! We're glad you made it!
