The Ft. Stockton/Lynaugh Units in Ft. Stockton, TX are good. We don't have coastal humidity that you find Down South (it's dry heat here) and Ft. Stockton (N5) Unit has A/C. 6 on/3 off, can't beat that. Uses of force and major issues with inmates are fairly rare. Both farms would qualify as non-rock-and-roll.
If you don't care about living close to a big city and want to go someplace where the weather is better, it's definitely a great place.
Also, they are bonus farms so I would imagine a transfer would be fairly easy to get. To my knowledge, there isn't a waiting list.

Yeah, but I'd bet money that the overtime is abysmal.

I think they have a tough time getting people to go there because of their location. Not many folks want to live out in the middle of nowhere. I love living near the coast. Lots of good fishing. The humidity sucks, but other than that I love it down here. And, my unit is good in that we rarely have serious issues with inmates. It's an easy unit to work, which is good. I must admit though that there are days when I'm sweating my azz off at the backgate, and wished I was in your dry heat. lol

I've never worked Down South in TDC but I'm from the Houston area, went to SHSU and know people who work at/have worked at units ranging from Clemens to Ellis...so I've heard PLENTY of stories about how it is down there.
As for Stockton...yes, it is known to suck, that's not up for debate, but the one saving grace (to me) that it has is at least it's on a major interstate.

Yea, the interstate helps. If TDCJ would have planned smart, they would have tried to place facilities where they would be attractive for employee's to live. One issue though is that if they do that it places a facility near folks who may not want one near them. It's a double edged sword so to speak.
