The A. Hughes Unit is one of the best units in TDCJ to work at. I will go out on a limb and daresay that the Hughes Unit is a flagship (premier) unit for TDCJ much in the same fashion that the Walls Unit in downtown Huntsville is. We have decent rank there from the Warden all the way on down to the sergeants. We'll be getting a new Warden soon to replace Warden John Werner because he got promoted to Region III Director but I expect that his replacement will be pretty good as well. I've been there well north of 15 years now and I haven't had very many bad supervisors there throughout the years. Other positives about the Hughes Unit is that it's a 2250 style of unit that's works the 12 hour 4/4 schedule and there are decent opportunities for advancement. The COs there are pretty solid for the most part due to the fact that a good number of them have many years in the agency and/or are retired military with extensive experience in leadership and management of people. There is a good bit of turn-over amongst the newer (younger) staff but I believe that this is mostly due to the Millenial lack of work ethics and such. There is nowhere near as bad of a turn-over rate here as most units have within the TDCJ. The best place to work at the Hughes Unit is AD-SEG. It's way more professional than General Population and you'll gain a lot of skills and experience there that will help you become a better CO and supervisor. If you haven't worked General Population yet, I recommend that do that for a little while so that you can learn how to manage offenders in their living and work areas. Furthermore, your time spent in General Population will enable you to see how everything ties together with the Building Schedule and all. These things that I suggest will help you become a well-rounded experienced CO and will make you capable enough to become a supervisor someday. Don't be afraid to move around and try new things.

I agree with Hondo. My dad used to work there, and retired from there. He was also retired military. The Killeen, Ft Hood, Copperas Cove, and surrounding area's are nice area's. There's good recreational opportunities at Lake Belton, and Stillhouse Lake. I've fished them both, and love both of them. If you like hunting there's ample opportunity on Ft Hood, and private leases can be had in the area if you're willing to pay the price. I lived there through a large portion of my childhood. Central Texas as a whole is a beautiful place.
