How does the comp time on a 4 on 4 off unit work? If I come in on my days off, how many hours will be comp before I can start to accrue overtime?

You start to accrue time as soon as you hit shift...Working on your days off goes to overtime.

What? Isn't it like a few hours of comp before you start getting overtime?

On a 12 hour 4/4 unit, you will accrue 9 hours of comp time a month and you have two years to use that time before you lose it. Holiday time must be used within one year. By coming to work everyday and not calling in sick, I average an extra two to four extra days off every month just for use/lose time. I have never used any vacation time, just holiday and comp time for my time off.

I do the same Hondo. I just recently took my six day stretch off and had twelve straight off, using only comp time or holiday time. A couple weeks before I took days off using only holiday time. I don't touch my vacation time.

What would one do with a bunch of built up vacay time? Build it up, and let it roll over into sick time at the first of September each year. Trust me when I tell you that you never know what might happen, and you end up needing a bunch of sick time. Accidents, illness, cancer, kids getting sick.....etc. All kinds of emergencies happen and that sick and vacation time come in real handy. Also, your sick and vacation time counts toward your retirement time credit. The time I had on the books added months to my service credit. It's always a good idea to build up as much vacation and sick time as possible.

Vacation time and sick time can be used to boost your retirement up. A boss with 15-20 years of service will typically have a year or two worth of vacation and sick time built up. This time is put towards their retirement and allows for them to retire sooner or retire with additional time in service. This all depends on when they hired on with TDCJ and how they want to use this time.

What? Isn't it like a few hours of comp before you start getting overtime? Allred it is Day 1 12 Hours Regular Time Day 2 12 Hours Regular Time Day 3 12 Hours Regular Time Day 4 9 Hours 45 Minutes Regular Time 2 Hours 15 minutes Comp time. 1 Assigned Day mandatory overtime....but most likely will get 30 minute to 1 Hour overtime...most likely you will just get sent home. Overtime is no longer Booked...We use to have to get 250 Hours booked before you started to get paid... In my 12.5 years I had 18.5 hours Overtime on the Books when I left...

You make it sound like you don't get paid when you work overtime. If there's 1 mandatory day per cycle, don't you get paid overtime. It's hard to see what the truth is.

well lets see...
they schedule you a Mandatory Day of Overtime... you get up..you get dressed..You go in and go through the Process to get inside the unit...You go sit in Turnout....Then and wait....Then they decide if they have enough staff or Not....If they decide they have enough Staff with "Assigned Shift Staff"...They Usually send most home....So you might get 1/2 to 1 hour Overtime...
Before they were not paying for you to "sit and wait" ...If you got sent home you got no overtime paid.
Back when I was working..In order to get an Overtime check you had to "Book" 250 Hours in order to start getting a Check.....only after 250 did you get paid. When I left I received pay for my 18.5 I had on the Books.

On the vacation and sick time, as it relates to retirement, I got payed for all my vacation time. And, I got service credit for my vacation time. Plus, all my sick time went toward service credit. It made a big difference. I retired early, and got a very nice check to boot.
