I'm a CO at Fort Stockton N5 Unit and I'm looking at a possible transfer to Connally. I'm curious to know about the unit and living arrangements. From what I've heard so far is that it's extremely difficult to find suitable local housing around the unit. Is that true? All responses are greatly appreciated.

From what I hear the oil boom has the housing in a crunch with all the oil people moving in down there.

I live around Connally and there's no place left to bunk up out here. If you want to make the trip, find a place to live first. It's a great unit that's suffering because of the local economic circumstances.

Yeah, the inmates don't decide shit on the Connally unit. We run this mother. I supervise on Connally and I can tell you it's a solid farm with some experienced officers who know their business at all CO levels. I've worked with COIIIs that have a firm handle on corrections, not to mention all the IVs and Vs.
The economy issue is the oilfield (isn't it always?). It's booming like crazy and making it hard to find housing.

I should probably just post my feelings and copy/paste to every thread.
My advice, if you were my son, is not to go. The way we roll at Hughes, is not the way they roll at Connelly. Lots of our bosses go, but now they are looking to lay back, or not go. The crooks run that place, and it's easy to see.
I went one time, and that was that. Maybe I'm used to my unit, or the people I work with. The Connelly boss that worked the picket was fine. He seemed like a good officer, but he was really burned out. It was a real culture shock to us, and the crooks when we walked on the pod. This was in seg...I can only imagine building.

I was a corrections officer for over 5 yrs in New jersey . Left for what I thought was better oppertunity, Wrong again!!! I live in San Antonion since 2006. I have really been thinking about getting back in to corrections. But I came from the old school , which I know is dead now ( SHAME). But I have heard night mare storys, about TDCJ. Inmates get to stay out & not lock in on weekends or monday night football?? That CO have very little control over there unit? supervisors will not back you, hit a inmate might lose your job? like I said came from era if inmate steped to you in aggressive maner you could drop him. I was under the impression Texas Prison system was tuff, but Now I think liberal North east IS , Please Tell ME I am WRONG? was looking at Conlley Unit.

..... better opportunity...... into corrections....heard nightmare stories....Please Tell ME I am WRONG???? was looking at Connally Unit. Unfortunately you heard right and your gut instincts appear to be right on the money. TDCJ has a lengthy infestation of the kind of leadership you described. Those cowardly supervisors are too weak to tell the inmates and a few dirty guards that they are required to lock down and rack-up. Guards could rectify the situation by sticking together and timely communicating directly to the truly responsible supervisors. There has to be at least a couple of good teams at a unit that size. I suggest visiting all the shifts and extending your availability to more than one unit. Is location that important to you? If so, there should be work in the oil fields. Where do you plan to do your TDCJ screening?

Hi Thank you for the response. I have been doing oil field work the last year & half . All lies there too . Be honest my heart is NOT in it even if the money is better. I miss the Adrenalin rush, working with good guys who have your back. Job that to me has some importance meaning. I know sounds dumb but working a job where you just drive and my mind goes to mush. I live in San Antonio are there any better prisons that are much better???

My brother used to shakedowns at CY and he had some crazy stories about Connally. Like finding mad cell phones and smelling tobacco being smoked. You could live in Beeville....a lot of people commute. Or used to.
