Has anyone here made the jump from full time to part time? What was it like? What type of hours did you work on your unit? Any other useful information? Will my 11 year of hazardous duty pay carry over to part time?
I'm currently a CO5 who has gone back to school. I've been carrying 10 hours at school while working 12 hour shifts, but I'll be transferring to Texas Tech in roughly 29 months. I want to try part time so I can focus on class.

From the Official TDCJ WEBSITE Part-Time Correctional Officer Program The Texas Department of Criminal Justice established a part-time Correctional Officer program in December 1998. The application and screening process for part-time positions is the same as for full-time positions. If selected for employment, part-time applicants must attend the six-week Pre-Service Training Academy and then undergo two weeks of on-the-job training (OJT) on the unit of assignment on a full-time basis. If full-time employment while on OJT interferes with college classes, the officer can undergo OJT on a part-time basis for four weeks. After OJT, the part-time officer works approximately 20 hours per week. The workdays and hours are worked out between the officer and the unit warden.
Part-time officers can permanently change to a full-time position with approval. They also have the option of temporarily switching to full-time employment once per year. This permits those who are working part-time while in college to work full-time during the summer break. With excellent pay, benefits and flexible work schedule, the part-time Correctional Officer employment program is just what many applicants are looking for.

My unit (Middleton) does not have part time. I'm hoping to transfer to Roberston as part time when the time comes. I'm keeping my place in the Abilene area, so coming back on weekends will work. My second choice is to work part time in Plainview, but that doesn't work nearly as well for me. Ideally I will live in Lubbock Mon-Thursday, have Friday completely off, and then work TDCJ Saturday and Sunday.

Have you tried contacting those Units and asking what they have available?

Have you tried contacting those Units and asking what they have available? I've got a call in with RB, but not with Plainview (it is more of a last resort.) That isn't really what I'm looking for in this thread though; I'm looking for the view of officers actually doing part time, or those that have some some direct observation on the matter.
