THANKS On the units that have three shifts it's typical for newboots to end up on the second shift. Usually, third is kept full and first is always full. On units with 12hr shifts, and only two shifts, night shift is pretty regular for newboots. Getting a shift change is usually a matter of submitting an IOC request for shift change to your major, and HR. Most units have a list of folks who requested to be on each shift. You'll be put on the list, and when your name comes up you get the shift change. I've seen some list as long as two years or more, just depends on how desirable the shift is that you requested. Another way to get to days is to put in for one of the H card jobs on the unit. Most units have several different H card jobs. Don't be afraid to volunteer for stuff and get your name out there. Then put in for the job you want, and give it 110%. Whatever shift you end up on give it 110% there. Become known as the problem solver, and not a problem maker. Then other supervisors will want you on their shift, and it could make things much easier for you to get the job you really want.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Marty I appreciate the information, But can you tell what the H card is you were talking about. Thank You again!! Officers are assigned to schedules called cards. The different schedules have different card designations. H card is the designation for monday through Friday schedule with weekends and holidays off. Most H card officers work 8-5 M-F, and will sometimes assist with visitation on the weekends. These jobs are usually officers working areas like STG, safe prisons, education, industry, field force, property officer, medical.......etc.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Marty I appreciate the information, But can you tell what the H card is you were talking about. Thank You again!! H card stands for Hottie. The warden reserves that shift for the good looking chicks. And, occasionally, there is a hottie or two given preferential treatment. They generally can be recognized because they have sore knee's, puffy lips, and stains on their shirts. ;D
