I got this out of the Abilene Paper and saw on the Dallas TV news
Gov. Abbott: An inmate committed the murder
By Staff report
Investigators are considering the death of a local corrections officers to be a homicide.
A statement from Gov. Greg Abbott said an inmate committed the murder.
About 3 a.m. Saturday, officials at the French Robertson Unit found 7-year officer Mari Johnson unresponsive near the prison’s kitchen area, according to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice news release.
Lifesaving measures were initiated before she was taken to Hendrick Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The prison is located just northeast of Abilene, near Hamby.
The Office of Inspector General — TDCJ is investigating the incident as a homicide.
“Correctional officers have one of the most difficult jobs in all of state government protecting the public from dangerous individuals,” said Brad Livingston, TDCJ Executive Director. “Each day thousands of men and women in gray are carrying out that critical mission. This is a tragic reminder that carrying out that mission can lead to the ultimate sacrifice. Ms. Johnson made the ultimate sacrifice to keep this state safe. She will never be forgotten. We will see that the offender who committed this cowardly act is held accountable.”
Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott released a statement on Johnson's death.
"The State of Texas mourns for Mari Johnson, a correctional officer who was senselessly murdered last night by an inmate at the Robertson Unit in Abilene, Texas. Like all those who faithfully serve, Mari was dedicated to protecting others, and her service will not be forgotten. Cecilia and I ask that all Texans keep the Johnson family in their thoughts and prayers in the aftermath of this unfathomably tragic event. Texas will ensure the perpetrator receives swift justice, and TDCJ has been instructed to take all necessary measures to enhance the safety of their staff to prevent such tragedies."
Dale Wainwright, Chairman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, said, “In times like these, it’s difficult to put into words the loss felt by the department when a correctional officer dies in the line of duty. I ask the public to remember their acts of unselfishness, remember their many acts of courage, and remember the dedication and commitment demonstrated every day by correctional officers. Please pray for this officer’s friends, family, and the department during this time.”
Investigators with the Office of Inspector General — TDCJ are at the location and processing the crime scene. As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, the agency will not be releasing any additional information at this time.
The French Robertson Unit is an all-male inmate prison. According to the TDCJ website, it can house almost 3,000 prisoners and is approved to have 510 security personnel and 106 non-security employees.
Johnson's death comes a year after the last on-duty slaying of a Texas corrections officer. Timothy Davison, 38, was attacked by an inmate in July 2015 at the Telford Unit near Texarkana in far northeast Texas. The inmate, Billy Joel Tracy, 38, already was serving a life prison term and now is awaiting trial for capital murder.

Can't wait to see the SIR to see what TDCJ uses for excuses to Blame everyone else....We all kn ow staffing levels will not be a factor in Safety. The problem with an SIR and staffing levels is that the staffing plans have all been cut to the bare minimum. So, they are already below what the staffing really should be, even if they are 100% staffed. My prayers and condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Mari Johnson. Your watch is over Mari. We'll take it from here. Thank you for your service.

Could this change the level of staffing we have? Could P1 positions be added?

Possible, but not probable. They'll conduct an SIR to determine what the facts are, and what happened to officer Johnson. Depending on what they find, they'll make recommendations based on the facts of their SIR.

Could this change the level of staffing we have? Could P1 positions be added? What changes have yall seen since the last Officer was Murdered a year ago? Nothing will change until Officers stand up..Until the Unions stand up and Demand Changes. Until then It's Oh Well...do your time and go home Why wasn't she wearing a Body Alarm? Why was she alone in the Area? When I first was in the Kitchen in GP on Allred for my First Kitchen Security Rotation we had 3 COs besides the "Kitchen" SGTs on Night shift. 4 COs on Days It has gotten to the point they No longer assign that many anymore..Usually like 1 or 2... Body Alarms are for Food Service...and None for Security. Security was routinely pulled for covering Breaks...Escorting Kitchen SSIs .... to and from the Kitchen Areas.

I understand that shit does happen, but let's take a step back. What could we do to insure that this is much less likely to occur in the future. If we considered every officer as our brothers and sisters, the way we say we do, what could we do to prevent this.

Demand Increased Staffing Levels.... Demand that No Officer be Alone with Offenders...Sight Unseen... Demand Supervisors Walk around... Speak out and Let the Public Know how Unsafe it is.... Demand More Radios and Body Alarms... When asked why people are quitting and it is hard to staff...TELL THE TRUTH.. not complain about just the Pay...
The pay wouldn't bad if you were not doing the Work of 3 to 4 Officers
2 Officers in a Year Murdered...Who will be Next...How Many More will be killed before people wake up and start doing more than "Simply showing up and doing their 12 and go Home"?
Watch out for each other

Watch out for each other This is a start. Even with this in mind, we have to face the reality that we do a dangerous job, no matter where we're assigned. Working with criminals on a daily basis is by definition HAZARDOUS. While we may take steps to hopefully lesson the risk, there will ALWAYS be the risk of injury or death at the hands of an inmate in our profession. To think or say otherwise is irresponsible, and dangerous. Inmates will take advantage of EVERY weakness in our security that they find. They will exploit ANY weakness. That's what they do, and they have 24hrs a day, 7 days a week to study us and our weaknesses. It's our job to close the gaps, strengthen security where we can, and reduce the opportunity for assaults. It's the job of our administration to move forward with this task immediately. Admin will put boots on the ground when they do their SIR, and they will attempt to find where our security failed. Then, hopefully, come up with idea's to strengthen the security in area's that will hopefully prevent a similar incident. Sometimes, SIR's uncover things we may not even think about. I guarantee you one thing, they WILL look at everything they can to find out what happened. I know there are a few who have little confidence in SIR's. The integrity of an SIR is only as good as the staff conducting the SIR. I've had the privilege of working with several folks who've participated in SIR's. I can tell you that each of them took their job serious. Each of them did their best to ensure a thorough investigation was conducted. It's not an easy job conducting an investigation into a serious incident. It can be damn hard, especially when it involves an officers death. I pray for the staff involved, Officer Johnson's co-workers, and the command staff. They all have a tough job ahead of them. They need everyone's support.

Only a Fool would believe otherwise and should not workout there. I would walk into a Lions den with protection .... I wouldn't smothered in Steaks A Solider will run into Battle if They Believe they have a Chance to survive.....They desert when They realize they stand no chance Eventually TDCJ will run out of the "Old Guard" who Blindly walk the Walls...Like the "Crows" from Game of Thrones. Honor those who have Fallen Speak for them...

Honor those who have Fallen Speak for them... Snitch, this is where you and I may differ a little. I consider myself one of the "old guard". Yet, I do NOT walk the halls blindly. I walk with the knowledge of the risk. And I use my knowledge and experience to reduce the risk as much as possible. We, the "old guard", walk the halls because we CHOSE to, knowing the risk and accepting it as part of our service to the citizens of Texas. We are far from blind.

www.ktxs.com/50231805Ouch..They going after the Big Boys on this one ! ! ABILENE, Texas - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice suspended a high-ranking member of the Robertson Unit staff and recommended the termination of three other employees following the murder of a corrections officer. TDCJ sources tell KTXS Assistant Warden Jimmy Webb was suspended for seven days and placed on four months of probation. TDCJ also recommended the dismissal of Maj. Eddie McQuade, a corrections officer at the prison, as well as two food service managers, Gregory Cruse and Patrick Roach. The disciplinary actions come as a result of a "Serious Incident Review" following the death of Correctional Officer Mari Johnson in July. "Our preliminary review has identified some operational processes related to making security checks, count procedures and equipment utilization that were not being properly followed by certain correctional staff at the prison,” TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark said. Dillon Gage Compton, 21, who was assigned to the kitchen area at the prison, is accused of attacking Johnson when she entered a storage area near the kitchen. Johnson was found unresponsive around 3 a.m. July 16. She was later pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center. Investigators with the Office of the Inspector General-TDCJ will present its evidence to the Jones County District Attorney once their investigation is complete. “TDCJ is committed to operating secure and safe facilities in Abilene and statewide,” Clark said. TDCJ previously confirmed Warden Ronald Fox is retiring. But they would not say whether his deciding had anything to do with Johnson’s murder.
