I'm a 39 yro female with prior military service and considering applying for a co position in the Gatesville area? Are they needing Co's in this region and what should I expect as a woman entering this field? Any constructive advice appreciated.

Yes, we need all the help we can get. As a woman, you should expect to be treated the same as any other correctional officer. You'll get the same training as the men. You have to pass the same tests as the men. My advice, come in with a positive attitude and a will to win. Positive attitudes bring positive results.

COs are definitely required at Gatesville. You'll likely be working at a female unit because there's only one male unit there. As a female CO assigned to a female unit, be prepared to work your ass off. If you're assigned to a duty position with a male CO, it will be as if you're working by yourself. Be prepared for that.

As a female CO assigned to a female unit, be prepared to work your ass off. If you're assigned to a duty position with a male CO, it will be as if you're working by yourself. Be prepared for that. Yup, male officers at a female unit can't pat search or strip search females. So any position that requires that will probably not have a male there, or will have a female with him to do the work. At my unit, which is co-gender, male officers do NOT work female dorms. They may go in to assist with certain duties, but they are NOT allowed to be assigned to a female dorm. Female officers on a male unit, whole nother ball game. Females years ago sued the state for the right to be treated equally to men in TDCJ. They got their wish. Now female officers can work anywhere a male can on a male unit. They have the same promotional opportunities, and can do all the duties a male officer does. PREA, Prison Rape Elimination Act, has put a bit of a kink in things though. Now days there is no cross gender viewing of offenders. Plus, if you are the opposite gender of the housing or work area you must announce your presence prior to entering. It's all a bunch of bullshit, and totally unnecessary. While certain parts of the PREA are helpful in preventing prison rape, there are a bunch of the mandates that actually are harmful. But, the legislators who enacted PREA didn't bother to ask real live corrections professionals their opinions on the reality of things, or what could be done to prevent prison rape. And, even though our state, and several others, protested several of the mandates our liberal socialist AG went ahead with all of them. PREA has effectively sent us back into the dark ages with regards to female officer equal rights. OK, my small rant on PREA is over.

On Allred Our Females usually don't work a Position which requires Offenders to be stripped out...A Male has to do all the Strip out. In GP A Female is not suppose to even see a strip out (Medium Custody Pods). 1 Card relieves even a Female Picket Boss...
in the Case of Seg and ECB Pods..After they are dressed a Female can Escort

PREA, while well meaning, was not well thought out and in fact causes some problems that could victimize offenders with the blind spots created so cross gender employee's can't view some search areas and bathroom areas.

Think about this. What if you have a male seg and a female supervisor who works seg. She supervises a UOF, and does the strip search. Not allowed. Or, you have a UOF and the video camera operator is a female, which means she will view the search. Not allowed. PREA CREATES DISCRIMINATION BASED ON GENDER, period, end of story. And, it'll take another lawsuit by staff to change it.

No Kidding...Medium Custody leaving their Housing Areas of the Building and Everyone going out to Recreation Yards are to be stripped...Where off Camera can they be stripped searched..Where can they possibly be stripped searched without a Female not accidentally seeing them?
They have already pushed the Responsibility of Offenders on the Pods by Requiring Offenders going to the Rec Yard to be Pat Searched by the Pod Bosses and no longer requiring the Desk Boss/ Building SGT to strip them out and only require them (Bull Shit, Cough Cough, Cough) to be stripped out coming Back in..
Do you think I am gonna take the Responsibility for Offenders whom I did not directly escort out to the Rec Yard Door who has been out of my Sight and passed who all Knows who and picked up anything from anywhere...If So I got some Beautiful Beach front property right next door to the Unit to sell you for 333 Trillion Dollars at 130%

Maybe us Males should sue for reverse Discrimination... Unfairly forced to work harder We are living in a time when white males can not claim to be offended or claim to feel discriminated against. When the term "reverse discrimination" was coined I said bullshit back then. Discrimination is discrimination no matter who is involved. When someone claims all they want is a hand up what they really mean is they want to be carried.

These guys don't bother me. Ha! I decided to follow through with the CO screening last week. I passed the test and was interviewed. Now I'm just waiting to hear back from TDCJ. Hopefully I can get in TDCJ Academy in Gatesville this month. Anyone know how long process takes to get a call back from TDCJ with an offer?

As long as you don't have anything in your criminal background that could eliminate you from consideration, you'll get hired. Time frames just depends. I've seen it take anywhere from just a couple weeks for a rehire, to 6-9 weeks for a new hire.

I applied on 5/20/15 and HR says my application is still being processed. I don't have a criminal history. Does this mean that they are just waiting on an open academy spot for me? I'm ready to get started already.
