soooo, im so glad to be away from tdcj. You know, i sit back and i read all these posts, and all i ever hear is crying and bitching about how bad it is, and how sorry officers are, and how people let offenders get away with something. STOP the WHINING!!! either go up or go home. Tdcj has become so freaking friendly its unreal. I worked for tdcj for close to 7 years, fought more fights than a majority of officers have in their career. When they acted up, yeah, i gave em what they deserved. But NOBODY can say that they dont talk to at least one offender. If you do think that, youre full of crap. Everyone has their "favorite inmate" that when they need something, they get him to do it. Whether it be washing out your dinner bowl cuz you're too freaking lazy to get up from your desk, or telling an offender to clean up a mess and depending on him to do it. Now, im still in law enforcement, but in a whole different organization. Im not worried about getting booted or blocked or whatever, cuz i know this is a friendly site. I can hear it now. :: in a baby voice:: "take it to the parking lot" well i hate to tell you, not everyone goes to the parking lot. If youre a sorry ass officer, you deserve to be told youre a sorry ass officer. And sadly, 90 percent of tdcj has become sorry ass officers.. Have a good day, and may God bless...

Yea, I agree. There are some shit sorry officers. But, I disagree on your percentage. I think the majority of the officers we have are just trying to make a living. They may not be the best, but they are just trying to make a living for their family. Other organizations are similar. When I worked as a reserve deputy for Galveston county they had shit sorry officers too. But, again, it was not the majority.
I'm all for bustin a sorry officer and firing them, or sending them to prison. In my career I've helped to do that on numerous occasions. There is a bit of satisfaction seeing an officer walked out the door, and knowing it was because of the intel you developed for the bossman that got him busted.
I'm glad you're enjoying your new job. TDCJ ain't for everybody. Some folks love it, some don't. I'm one who loved every minute of it. Still do. But, retirement and that free money was too good to pass on. And, even after more than 30yrs it still seems like yesterday when I first walked through the gates at Ramsey 1. Who knows, maybe one day I'll go back like so many of my compadre's and double dip, make double what everyone else is making for the same job.
(oh, btw, my baby voice is fairly deep ;D)

Sounds like someone has issues with how the agency is being ran. Rather then blame those who need to be blamed, he blames people trying to make a living. The STATE is the one who's at fault here, good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good. You left for better pay, so that should answer many of your questions as to why it is the way it is.

Your going to have good and so-so and bad staff no matter how much you pay. This isn't the first time the issue of more pay has been brought into the fray. Using as an excuse for the way things are doesn't work either. Taking a job, knowing what it pays, and then bitching that it doesn't pay enough makes NO sense. I think it makes more sense for TDCJ to find a way to reward employees, fairly, for their work performance. Currently you can work your butt off, day after day, and get the same as the lazy boss that , hears nothing, see's nothing and says nothing, and does nothing.

People take the job knowing what they will make. They just didn't think they'd make the same 20 years later. Expecting cost of living raises is not unrealistic. Not getting them is.

And, THAT is a fact. It's the same for benefits. When I started we had a choice from about 6 different health insurance companies. You chose the one with the program that best fit you and your family, and your budget. It was nice. Now, no choice. You get what the shove down your throat, whether you like it or not. When I started we also had incentives to go up for rank, like emoluments, FREE housing. Now, NOTHING for incentives. Hell, the difference in pay between the ranks doesn't even make up for the extra hours your gonna work because you made rank. Plus, when I started you had the lure of an early retirement, if you could stand the job that long. Now, as I understand it, there is a bill ready to be signed in which anyone hired after Sept 1, 2013 will have to work until they are at least 57 if they are a correctional officer, and 60 something for a regular employee. It's all total bullshit. I'm glad they are making the state and employee's increase their contributions to ERS, as that is going to make it actuarial sound. FOR YEARS our legislature has been fucking over the employee's. And, they will continue to do so as long as they think they can get away with it.

They are turning into a job, like a fast food restuarant, work there until you don't feel like it and go elsewhere. No retirement paid.

TDCJ-risk of assault daily, feces thrown on you, piss chunked on you, cursed at daily, risk so high that our job is one of the most stressful in the nation, with extremely high divorce rates, and early death after retirement due to stress incurred on the job. Not something most people are willing to do. Fast food restaurant-risk of burning yourself on the fryer, drop a dish get docked in pay, wtf over. Low pay. Low self esteem. First job for some. High turn over due to young people moving on to bigger and better things. Customer ticks you off, and risks food enhancements. Meh, lots different than working with convicted felons each day.

I'm talking benefits Marty. They will keep chipping away at them until there is little difference between the state and McDonald's. I remember what the benefits were in 1985, no comparison.

The lege has been screwing our benefits over since I first started in '82. They chip away at them each session. Rotten SOB's don't give a rats patootee about the state worker.

Come on Schroeder, lighten up. Yeah we had some sorry ass officers at Gist, but the majority were/are decent. im not saying there arent decent officers out there, but it is just sad the way the whole agency is ran. Its no wonder that they cant keep nobody. You know, you look at all these other agencies, and they dont have HALF the problems tdcj has. All it takes is a little of money to get things right, as in pay your officers a DECENT amount, and actually at least ACT like you care for them. As a former officer, me and my crew from lt on down, were family. You messed with one, you had us all... we had each others backs like nobodys business.... Had no doubt at all about another person in the crew not being dirty, or bringing something in, or ratting us out when things going bad... if an inmate needed his ass whooped, thats what it was. Now, its ran like a big ass daycare center. Catering to these idiots. Getting in trouble for slapping the shit out of one if need be. And ksb, who the hell is shroeder?
